Aloha, Hawaiian Style
In ancient Hawaii, visitors were invited into homes by calling out, "Hele mai ai, Come in and eat!" The sharing of food and enjoying the company of travelers still exists today as it is a lifestyle of the Hawaiian people. It became the culture of aloha, many a time those words have been expressed by Nani and Don.
Aloha in its generic term, is often translated as hello, goodbye, and love. In Old Hawaii, aloha had a deeper meaning. The word breaks down into "alo" meaning "in the presence of" or "to share," and "ha," is the "breath" which is the life energy, by Native Hawaiian terms, it is a sacred word, which means, "Sharing the Breath of Life." The Aloha Spirit is a spirit of harmony, affection, and mutual respect and is reflected in the way we interact and treat others.
History
Nani and Don opened their doors to their first guests in January of 1990 by helping friends accommodate their visiting loved ones in their extra self contained studio apartment. Kohala's Guest House evolved into a business due to the constant demand of temporary housing.
A newly built long term lease duplex was turned into a shorter stay vacation rental. The rest is history. Since 1990 they have received thousands of guests many who have returned and are now referred to as "good friends."
